Experimental Methods in Mechanics

Overview

Author: Edoardo Mazza

In the last decades experimental mechanics gained increasingly importance in our research. On one hand we believe that a significant improvement in the comprehension of mechanics theories can be achieved through experimental validation. On the other hand we enjoy the challenge of performing complex mechanical measurements, for which multidisciplinary engineering problems have to be solved.

We involve students at an early stage of their education in the activities of our laboratory (semester or diploma work).

Most of our research projects include experimental tasks. The following links should provide an overview of the variety of the experimental techniques that we have developed in our laboratories:

Nanosonics: Laser-based Ultrasonics at the Nanometer Scale

Micro-manipulation of Small Particles

Tissue Aspiration Experiment

Biaxial Material Testing Machine

Membrane Inflation Device

Torsional Resonator Device

Size Effects in Thin Copper Foils

Detection of Defects in Cylindrical Structures

Non-axisymmetric Wave Propagation in Cylindrical Structures

High Frequency Dynamical Rheometry on Confined Emulsions
