Abstract
An experimental method for the detection of
fatigue cracks at holes in aluminum specimens is investigated. The first
anti-symmetric Lamb wave mode A0 is excited. Using a heterodyne laser
interferometer, the scattered field close to the hole during crack growth is
monitored. The fatigue crack is initiated and propagated by cyclic tensile
loading of the test specimen in a servo-hydraulic testing machine. The
measurements are compared to finite difference calculations. Good qualitative
agreement is found.
