and Qualitative Nucleic Acid Analysis.

Abstract
We are going to describe a versatile diagnostic sample preparation
microsystem. The key element from which a variety of liquid and suspension
handling functions can be implemented is the thermopneumatically actuated
silicone valve. As compared to others we could reduce the thickness of the
silicone membranes by a factor of ten down to 3 um which allows us to operate
them in narrow channels of 20 to 50 um and at high density. They can partly and
completely close these channels with a depth of 7 to 20 um at any time. this
posiibility of fluid handling is in contrast to other cell manipulation
techniques like electrostatic, light trap and electrophoresis. Especially pumps
are easily added at no extra costs. These pumps are bi-directional and have no
dead volume. Thus cleaning is easily possible in the completely open channels.
